The New Mastercard logo
The internet is abuzz about the new Mastercard logo. If you’re like me, you think it’s been a long time coming. It’s been over 20 years since Mastercard has had a facelift. Honestly, I think it’s great. The new logo has progressed the brand forward, without losing any of its identity. That’s tough to do when you’re a well-established brand.
A Newer, Simpler Look
The great thing about the new Mastercard logo is its simplicity. Much like the ever-successful ABC logo that lasted so many years, the new Mastercard logo takes a page out of Paul Rand’s book. No longer will you see the Mastercard text overlaid on top of the merging circles graphic. I always had a problem with this anyway. It’s tough to read and tough to work with. It was just too much competing against each other.
Now, the circles overlap, with no complicated lines in the middle. The company name is displayed below, which is much easier to read. It also opens up the doors for more flexibility. You can use the logo to work with add-on products sponsored by Mastercard. Michael Bierut talks about this with Fast Company in their coverage of the logo redesign.
Who Redesigned the Mastercard Logo?
That would be none other than the design and branding powerhouse Pentagram. They are the ones behind so many brand evolutions we’ve seen throughout the years. When they take on a redesign or branding update project, they always handle it the right way.
What do You Think of the New Mastercard Logo?
Do you think it was a successful redesign? With it being in millions, if not billions of places worldwide, the Mastercard logo may be one of the biggest brands on earth. Think about how many people carry a Mastercard in their wallets. I have a Paypal debit card, issued by Mastercard. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the redesign.
